What is Greenwich Church?
'Greenwich Church' is the generic title that best describes all the Christian Churches that are located within the
Greenwich Borough boundary (Abbey Wood, Blackheath, Charlton, Coldharbour, Eltham, Kidbrooke, Plumstead, Thamesmead, Woolwich)
and is represented by one of the Borough Deans. The web site is owned and developed by Mervyn Fernandez (currently frequenting
New
Community Church) as a free service to the Christian community in Greenwich.
The idea of the web site is to map all Christian activity that is going on within the Greenwich Borough in approx. 100 churches.
I will also try to keep the Christian community upto date on the activities and possible synergy with:
- Greenwich Chamber of Commerce
- Greenwich CVS
- Volunteer Centre Greenwich
- ChangeUp Greenwich
- Greenwich Council
- The Greenwich Partnership
The initial 3 areas of focus are the Alpha course, Youth work, and working with offenders and ex-offenders.
Alpha
The Alpha course is an evanglistic tool created by Holy Trinity Brompton church. We aim to create a borough
wide Alpha strategy for advertising etc and possibly coordinating the timing of the courses so at any one time
in the borough their will be an Alpha course running which will be open to people from other church or denomination
to get involved.
Youth
All the youth work co-ordination will come under the guidance of GYFC (Greenwich Youth For Christ). I will be
developing a website for GYFC under Greenwich Church to promote their activites.
Prison
With the success of the Alpha course in prisons accross the whole of the UK we aim to continue and build upon this
within the borough with regular courses being run within the Belmarsh prison. We hope to develop a support
network for ex-offenders to bridge-build them from the prison gates to the church gates. This will be
in the form of a mentoring program that has been developed by
Prison Fellowship ministries in America.
